Kingsville: Powell Gardens

Kingsville, Missouri

Powell Gardens

Located just southeast of Kansas City, this 915 acres botanical garden’s history dates back to 1948 when the land was purchased by George E. Powell, Sr, a prominent Kansas City businessman. The land has served as a dairy farm, Boy Scout camp, an agricultural and natural resource center, and since 1988, a botanical garden. Attractions include a 2-acre Island Garden that features the longest “living” wall in the U.S.; 3.5-acre Perennial Garden; 2.5-acre Rock and Waterfall Garden; the Parterre Garden; a Wildflower Meadow and Terrace Gardens. A 3.25-mile nature trail takes visitors and along a creek that flows into the Gardens’ 12-acre lake.Photo: Birch log fairy house, Enchanted Garden Exhibit, March 12 – April 24, 2011 [ info ]
