Originally purchased during the War of 1812 as a summer retreat by wealthy Salem shipping merchant Joseph Peabody, the estate remained in the Peabody family for 144 years. Currently owned and restored by the local historical society, the grounds incorporate a series of gardens including: A pergola made up of ten marble columns originally from Belmont’s Cushing Estate; a Flower Garden designed in the Italiante style; a Lovers Walk; and a Rose Garden.
